Just trying to gauge early feelings about the next presidential election, especially with the looming specter of Trump running again. Thanks to any and all who take it
Due to unforseen circumstances I was not home last night until very late; results tonight I promise
Results and a write up coming later tonight
“If Trump is nominated will you be more or less likely to vote in the general.”
Neither. I’ll take 5 minutes of my life to uselessly vote for the Green or PSL or write in Lenin or something whoever the Republican candidate is. If the Democrat is somehow a Bernie-type, I’d uselessly vote for them.
Regardless of who runs, I was doing a little research on presidential elections a day or two ago and discovered that Republican presidential nominees have gotten 47% of the popular vote (plus or minus 1%) in every election for the last two decades. I didn’t look further back but I doubt the numbers are too different.
If Democrats went completely nuts trying to wrest Texas and Florida out of Republican hands (by giving people a reason to vote for them for instance), there is pretty much no way the Republicans could take the presidency. Both Florida and Texas are incredibly close to flipping blue and also incredibly important, but they’re controlled by Republicans.
Democrats have nonetheless made few if any worthy efforts to take control of these two vital states because if they did, they would actually have to govern the country. In the last four decades they’ve had the presidency and congress together for a total of five years.
I think Florida is actually becoming more Republican but while the GOP gains Florida and Ohio as states in their column they have lost Colorado, Virginia, and Nevada while Georgia, Arizona, and North Carolina have moved into the battleground column, with Texas on its way to join them
