Real answer: the main dish that they serve, called a runza is basically like a bastardized version of a Bierock, which is a dish of Russian origin that was popular among Volga Germans. So when some of them came here, they took the recipe with them and then it got fucked up here because us pigs love our unhealthy fries ass slop. As for why they chose Latvia, I guess they just figured it would do well there? I have no fucking clue lol
OK, but literally so is the rest of the planet. Is it that existential dread that hangs over the Midwest that attracted them to Latvia?
Other than the disdain for living there everyone living in those places seem to share, it just seems like the most random fucking place to expand to.

I think it’d fucking kill it over there, this would fit right in in a Lido and all the local food is some mashup of black bread, garlic, sauerkraut and meats anyways.
apparently they actually sent over like 200 of them for taste testing to the ministry of agriculture and they apparently liked them so much that they were gonna open one there and dedicate a whole collective farm to it, but ofc Latvia tried to break away so they couldn’t go through with it lol
Runzas are awesome. They are based on a traditional immigrant food from kansas wheat farmers known as a bierock. Easy to make at home. Trick is to use yeast rolls for the dough and precook the meat and cabbage down beforw baking. Also, Runza has the beat fries and chili with cinnamon rolls!!
I’ve gotten runza when passing through years ago on a recommendation of a friend. The runza sandwich struck me as very Soviet for some reason. Not I have an idea why lol
