Against themselves? I can understand the drive to go abroad for education, but it’s not like China isn’t capable of educating people at this point.

Any plan predicated on Americans not being racist is doomed to fail from the get go.

Nonono. Only American universities have smart people in them. We are the shining city on a hill! We are the center of civilization! We are…

China’s Fudan University (4th) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (5th) both climb up in the university ranking to join Tsinghua University (1st), Peking University (2nd) and Zhejiang University (3rd). Tsinghua retains the top position in the ranking for the third year in a row. University of Science and Technology of China (7th) and Nanjing University (9th) are Chinese mainland’s other two representatives in the top 10.

Nooooooooo!

Yeah I got good friends related to cops so I wouldn’t actually advocate for this but it would be at least a little funny

Advocating that responsibility should only be leveled on the individual basis and never in the collective is one of the key ways Westoids try to prevent themselves from being held accountable for historical crimes like slavery and genocide.

a grass-roots police officer

This has to be a mistranslation right? Of something like “humble” or “small time”?

As a policy Chinese cops are expected to live in, and interact with, the communities they’re policing. It’s not uncommon for a residential area (think a city block or two) to have its own resident police officer whose job it is to participate in community organizations and events, in addition to providing policing.

This goes back to the Maoist theory of the Mass Line, where the participation and consent of the people are essential to police work.

My guess is that the dad is a community police officer.

The 公安 officer in my grandparents’ apartment building was a lazy failson who spent all his time smoking counterfeit cigs and playing (and losing) mahjong with the old people in the apartment complex. This is of course not a bad thing because lazy failsons who play mahjong all day > american piggies who brutalize black people.

There are a lot worse things he could be doing than keeping elderly folks company.

In the worst case he could be hussling them, but let’s be honest it’s most likely the other way around.

This sounds like the best version of police office I could think of

It speaks to how fucked up US policing is that basic principles of policing by consent seem radical.

Yeah this definitely makes more sense than the spontaneity implied by the author’s choice of words lol
