I mean, yeah, that’s kinda the whole thing about being a Zionist. The progressive lgbt part is kind of irrelevant.
So what is it that attracts these types of people to Israel? They seem informed enough to at least have somewhat of a clue about what Israel’s doing. I keep coming back to the idea of a fortress stronghold in the middle east that’s only for Jews with barbarians at the gate must seem sexy to them, like the allure of it all.
If you offer a lib living in the US, suffering like any other, a way better living standard in Israel given its welfare state payed by muricans, they take it.

Because well-off liberals need something to care about or look forward to. Just like capitalism needs fascism to get anyone enthused and excited about destroying communism. When people have material needs met they need something to believe in still. Thats my guess. It’s probably why I’m a socialist too.
They get to form part of a privileged upper class in an apartheid state where the enemies are considered less than subhuman and you can do anything you like to them and get away with it, and the government is 100% cool with it.
I’m not sure if there is a good analysis of American Jews who join the IDF. I would guess many of them come from religious Zionist families, or have close family in Israel. I think for young men there is some of the Israel Man/ Diaspora Boy dichotomy. I think for a lot of US teenagers though, it’s just an escape from boredom.

There was a time when Zionists weren’t all fascist zealots and some actually just wanted to fuck off out of Europe because of antisemitism, Einstein was in favor of a secular state in the middle east for Jews to make their home among the other indigenous people there. Later on around the time of the actual founding of Israel he changed his position because it was clear that that wasn’t the intent of the majority of Zionists. He actually turned down an offer to be its first head of state IIRC.

Yeah interfaith marriages are not recognised by the state of Israel, effectively illegal.
I’m pretty sure none of us moved to China or North Korea, became a solider for 2 years, and proceeded to start our own #progressive movement on it. This person did that. I’m certainly not under any illusions of the oppression LGBT people are under in other socialist states, and have criticized it plenty. The critical in critical support should not be overlooked.
Not specifically on this site, but a bunch of leftists went to fight in Rojava despite it not being particularly big on the LGBT thing.
