Because you were in high school and still trying to figure out your identity. (He was too)
Sorry if this sounds harsh but it’s hard to follow your post. Stop romanticizing this dead-end and stop posting about it and make friends with people in your life today.
Maybe I’m reading this wrong, but it sounds like he posted that photo 5 years ago. I haven’t kept up with your other posts about him, but it’s possible he doesn’t even remember that post and would be embarrassed by it now. People grow and change, and five years is a long time.
I need friends super into sci-fi to help me look for new stuff while I mourn the complete erasure of the person who was my friend. I really don’t want to be alone right now.
I’ll be your sci-fi friend, it is one of my favorite genres. Let me know if you are looking for recs.
I am deeply sorry about your friend. It’s really sad when the people we have come to know and love excised themselves from empathy and love for themselves and others.
That’s a hard experience, I’m sorry, you seem like a really kind and thoughtful person.
If it’s any small comfort, I’m happy to add some sci-fi recommendations to the list (I’m a huge sci-fi dork myself). I’ve found solace in reading my whole life - during hard times it can be really comforting to take refuge in a good book.
Some of my favorites:
The Ware Trilogy by Rudy Rucker - early proto-cyberpunk with cool politics and fun sci-fi ideas (e.g., a burger chain that sells vat-grown human meat cloned from celebrities and pop stars, an anarchist robot colony on the moon, intelligent telepathic sex toys… you get the idea)
The Maddadam trilogy by Margaret Atwood - a great story with a solid ecological critique
William Gibson’s early stuff, esp. Neuromancer
Anything by Bruce Sterling (Holy Fire, Heavy Weather and Distraction are some of my favorites)
Blood Music by Greg Bear
Anything by Kim Stanley Robinson - New York 2041 is great, as are the Red Mars trilog books, and the Years of Rice and Salt (more of a speculaive alternate-history thing than sci-fi, but really cool, the basic premise involves exploring an alternate timeline where europeans are totally wiped out by the plague, soe colonial empires never exist)
I could go on, haha, I love this stuff, but I’ll stop there. Feel free to DM me if you want more recs! Stay strong, friend.
Wait, I’m super confused. Is he dead or just not your friend anymore? Cause if it’s the latter, surely being friends for ten years makes him worth attempting to save?
