I learned to code. I am good enough to get a job at a Google/Amazon/Facebook. Should I do it? I feel like it would be working for the devil, but I also feel like almost every job is like that. $200k/yr sounds pretty nice.
Make the search engine say “lmao” whenever you type in 69
the whole tech industry is nothing but devils. you will work to create awful shit that destroys the world, your fellow human, and yourself. You can imagine yourself quitting now, but by the time you realize what you’ve done, the prospect of finding another job will seem too scary. But There Is No Alternative. Labor power is near zero in tech, and the system is structured to make people complicit without giving them access.
So idk, maybe. I probably would.
Assuming you’re in a position where you’re lacking funds to do the things that you’d rather be doing (e.g. starting a worker co-op) then go for it. Bonus points if you’re able to gain the respect of your coworkers and win them over.
It seems pretty tough to find a job in tech that isn’t evil in some way or another. So I lean towards the Zizek quote’s sentimenr, but you should probably have some plans for an exit strategy if you wind up on a project that you’re fundamentally opposed to or something.
Maximize the utility though; be lazy. If they’re making you pull more than 40 hours a week without OT, it ain’t worth it. Can’t help shit except by donating money if you’re pulling 60 hour weeks because of psychopath techbro culture. Amazon’s pretty bad for that even above warehouse work, I’m told.
