Like, it’s so bad. I knew this, but my family threw on a documentary and it’s just… like I don’t even know. Is there any way we’re making it out of this? Given the Political situation, I just don’t see how we’re going to stay under 3 degrees Celsius. I’m at a loss, this is why I don’t watch these things because it just makes it so hard to go on.
What is the correct path forward? How could we possibly influence global politics enough to make a change in this? Serious answers wanted this is just so :agony-deep:
One thing leftists need to understand is that small actions do lead to large results so long as they’re coordinated. Like, organizing from the ground up will literally be you and one friend doing random acts of public service for a while. You throw periodic parties that are lowkey recruitment drives. You continue asking people for help in smaller and smaller ways until the ask is finally small enough for them to engage. You plan goals that are easy wins so that you can overshoot them and get that morale boost.
Think about how effective the masks were when people were using them. Think about how ineffective they were now that people have stopped. It’s a nearly meaningless action on the personal level. That’s why so many people saw it as symbolic. The reality is that anybody who wore a mask was a very small part in a gigantic effort that saved millions of lives. That’s the power of being able to see from the general to the particular, which is a phrase I saw earlier today. On a related note, the folks over in !bloomer@hexbear.net are going to be compiling resources on how to effectively begin organizing to fight climate change. Should be worth checking out
The correct path is destroying capitalism and mobilising the worlds armies to plant carbon-absorbing plants and then putting strong regulations on how much we are allowed to pollute.
Not going to lie, I’ve studied this stuff and it’s grim, but be glad at least that our society seems to be collapsing so at least that will give the planet time to revive.
I hope it doesn’t come to that though, my hope is that capitalism will be toppled and we can fix climate change and never let it happen again.
Sometimes I think of these solutions just to catch a breath for a minute.
But then I think of how cryptocurrency alone is using up 100% of the power generated by all solar panels installed for the past 20 years.
But then I think of China cracking down on cryptocurrency and spamming out public transit at home and abroad, and think maybe there’s at least one place that has a chance of still existing in a century. So that’s cool.
I’m currently reading KSR’s new novel, The Ministry for the Future, and it seems like a mostly realistic take on what it would take to turn things around. It’s…grimly optimistic, if that’s a thing?
The thing to focus on is that every degree, and subdegree of warming, matters. There’s no “cut-off” point in which it makes no sense to fight. 3 degrees of warming is terrible, but 4 degrees is fucking worse, and 5 is like unimaginably bad. Every tiny bit does actually help save lives. Every effort to cut emissions, however small so long as it’s systemic, is “worth it.”
