I haven’t bought books online in ~7 years. Back then I was a liberal and I thought Better World Books was a good (as in decent) company. I tried to use the site today but they rejected my credit card.

Better World Books

Better World Books is an American online bookseller of used and new books, founded in 2002 by students of the University of Notre Dame, Indiana.

Better World Books’ used book inventory comes primarily from regular book drives at over 1,800 colleges and universities and donations from over 3,000 library systems, in addition to donation boxes found on corners and on college campuses. The company has distribution warehouses in Mishawaka, Indiana; Reno, Nevada; and Dunfermline, Scotland.

Edit 1

I forgot to include the word “used” in the title.

Edit 2

I emailed Better World Books. Apparently the reason they rejected my credit card was that I was using a VPN.

That’s my go-to as well. Can’t beat the prices there. Though I have found their http://libgen.lc/ mirror faster.

I’ve never used that before. How do you grab what you want? I tired the torrent links but I had no luck.

For my test example: Adventures in the Screen Trade there were two links. Neither worked for me in Utorrent

  • One-file Torrent --> The download arrow is red.

  • Torrent per 1000 books --> “Error ‘connection closed by peer’ while downloading URL”

Is Torrent per 1000 books a typical thing? It would be fantastic if the damn thing worked.

Just don’t use the torrent links. Just click the Libgen link in the Mirrors section, then click “GET” on the top of the screen to download the file directly. These files are so small you don’t need P2P downloads for them.

If you want to buy print books, try bookshop.org. They divide up profits between small local bookstores. But mostly, there’s libgen.

Red Emma’s. It’s a worker owned bookstore in Baltimore that delivers stuff all across the globe. And they carry most of Zero Books’ stuff.
