God Damnit. God fucking Damnit. Fuck Fuck Fuck this is disgusting, private prosecutions. didn’t even give credit for time served. all for beating Chevron in an environmental case and appealing a preposterous court order. I knew cruelty was the point in this but fuck. Even if he actually did 6 counts of contempt of court 2 years and 8 months is more than can be legally given for that.
The [$8.6 billion judgment against Chevron] was ultimately scrapped, and Donziger was ruled to have won it through fraud and bribery
Wasn’t it ruled based on the testimony of some guy who was paid off a million dollars and admitted to lying? Am I remembering those facts right?
But U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska […] wasn’t swayed. She detailed what she characterized as Donziger’s prolonged, repeated refusal to obey court orders, musing that “it seems only the proverbial two-by-four between the eyes” would get him to properly respect the law.
:agony-deep:
Will from Chapo has been consistently retweeting about this case, IIRC the judge had some shifty ties to oil companies
It’s all rigged
He’s being prosecuted by chevron lawyers. Like not even a DA who receives donations from them, it’s a private prosecution!
What I want to say in response to this would get the FBI to try and entrapt me.
Anyone have an article that’s not fellating the prosecution?
I used it because it was the first source I could find that confirmed he’s been jailed, and “TikTok Hero and Chevron Foe” would be a title i’d wear with honor
Disgusting. But welcome to what the black community faces every fucking day under this disgusting vile cruel “justice” system. :amerikkka:
I typically hate the dystopia comparison thing but jesus christ is there anything more fucking dystopic capitalist than private prosecution?
Private prosecutions have been around forever, and they can theoretically be useful. If for example the state does not charge a cop for a wrongful shooting, the family of the victim can in theory initiate a private prosecution.
In practice however there are significant costs involved and most people simply would not have the funding to go through with something like that. Corporations on the other hand…
