CDC paper. The company responsible for one of these poisonings is likely Oh Sweet Art, located in Palm Bay, Florida.

Their decorative “non-toxic” powders, which may contain up to 25% lead, are still available on Amazon (lol).

Modified the title to reflect what, specifically, is a problem with the cakes, so there’s no panic about every hunk of fondue.

Just let cakes look like cakes goddammit! Stop making them look like cars or cartoon characters or any of that bullshit. Decorate the thing with real food stuff like fruit or cream or marzipan instead of that chemical crap.

Product description:

you can give your cakes and crafts the personality they deserve

In the open questions:

Is this item eatable?

Answers:

Recent reviews state it is NOT EDIBLE and NOT FOOD GRADE per the website and per taste testing.

the product label says it is NOT EDIBLE

Incredible. And of course half the pictures posted by reviewers show it on cakes and edible stuff.

I’d like to think that the 5-star reviewers all have brain damage from lead poisoning, like this one:

Archiving a few Amazon pages related to these potentially leaded products

https://archive.md/4nWIE

https://archive.md/dUnCw (1332 reviews!)

https://archive.md/1Fo5s

After some digging, the people associated with selling these products on Amazon seem to be resellers. Since they’re likely not involved in making the lead powders, I won’t bother getting into names-and-addresses stuff. Still tryna find the source but the Florida business entity search is down for me.

edit: I found out that the people distributing this stuff on Amazon are also the people who co-founded the company that made the leaded powder sprinkles, so… smaller world than I was expecting, but hopefully that means it’s a smaller operation that hasn’t harmed that many people.

Lol one of the reviews is a guy who has been putting it on cakes for his clients. They are “very pleased”

Capitalism being the most efficient economic system ever™, as usual. It’s so much better to expect everyone engaged in toxicological, electrical, mechanical safety research than to have a trusted authority (gasp! Sounds like authoritarianism to me) impose on the blessed job creators.
