I mean its not that uncommon, though you are right that such a drift of genetic material would also have a hard time reconstituting itself into a new virus. Virus produce so many copies of themselves within our bodies that genetic drift is going to happen; If you flip a coin a trillion times youre going to have a couple of strings of 100 head results in a row.

:marx-joker: Not even kidding here, but all these variants are just never going to end in the foreseeable future huh? I read that some researchers from Texas released a patent-free vaccine for the world to use. That is a huge step, cause while the US (among other countries) have donated something like 300k vaccines, it’s still not coming out fast enough. Not even sure if fully vaccinating the world will completely stop new variants though, but at least it shouldn’t be as deadly.
