Back from my auntās and realise she and my uncle really are that much older now.
rambling
Lifting up simple things is harder for themā¦ they definitely seem more tiredā¦ and this aunt is just like another one Iām much closer to, has about five opened packets of the same thing because her pantry is so disorganised and sheās getting forgetful.
They also havenāt noticed how much dust has accumulated on the tops of picture frames, cupboards, the ceiling - the kitchen lights have a gross oily dust web around them - the range hood is horribly stained and caked with oil. Theyāve always had lots of stuff but this time it seems a bit more hoarder-y and unstable, than just lived-in with decades of memoriesā¦ Tbh itās the first time itās been apparent to me too. So maybe Iāve changed.
Am going back on Friday to help tackle the big pantry cupboard with about 500 packets/bottles of herbs, spices and traditional medicines that need consolidation, but will also see if I have the time/energy to try and clear some of the worst dust. And have a quiet chat with my uncle at least about them spending a bit more to get help to clean what they canāt clean any more.
Todayās smaller cupboards yielded enough vacuum-packed peppercorns to last a decade, and at least three treesā worth of massive cinnamon sticks - but also some interesting village finds like:
-
long pepper (the original black pepper of ancient Indo-European recipes!!),
-
palm treacle powder,
-
foxtail millet flour,
-
a porridge powder made from the leaves of a wild almost-citrus and
-
horse gram. Not an equine social media site but a rustic breakfast grain. traditionally youāre also supposed to drink the water drained after cooking as a medicineā¦
Iāve got the doors open and any little sound the dog goes burko. I tell him to go back to bed but instead he runs and sits outside of my daughterās bedroom so he can protect her. Big bad Brutus.
Still 30 degrees outside but I feel comfortable. Dry weather is just so much more bearable.
Moths are flying around my pantry and wardrobeā¦ They didnāt come from outside and I havenāt really bought any clothes so maybe it was a rogue box of crackers? Iāve set out both types of traps and moved the dry goods to the fridge to protect them/kill any eggs but may just do a big chuck out. Then wipe the pantry shelves. Then vacuum.
Also perhaps heat the woolen coats in the dryer and put them in clothing bags.
Iām tired already and donāt want to :( This is not going to be done in one day. Itās probably going to be one shelf at a time. Then vacuum after that if Iām lucky
I ran for the train at Spencer Street, as there are delays and weirdly Iād catch it earlier than usual due to timingsā¦ Only for it to go to Flinders and then back to Spencer and then onwards.
Anyone know why trains arenāt doing the loop? I mean I donāt mind because the loop adds time to my trip anyway, just curious if there āpolice activityā in the loop or something lol
Someone was hit at Parliament. Someone was also hit earlier on the Pakenham line.
I used to have to travel to Footscray for uni all my connecting trains ran straight from flinders to spencer and vice versa.
On public holidays I was always forced to use a train to take the loop and also weekends as well.
I think also what happens is that some trains that go north bound will be forced into the loop.
Thatās all I know from my experience.
Not contentious, but easily answerable by looking at the metro trains Twitter.
I mean fair, but I did search on metros website and on PTV before I asked. I donāt think to check twitter as I have never used it. Apologies for my ineffectual search efforts and stupid question.
