Article proceeds to talk about how giving something away for free is a bad thing
:reddit-logo: wants to wring hands about zoning laws
I mean that land is all stolen, so no, I wouldn’t take it. I’m sure that’s not why that article is against it though lol
If you live in the US or Canada and you’re not Indigenous, then you’re on stolen land. That’s not “yet you participate in society”, that’s free land is free land and unless there are too many caveats (as there are in this case), there’s no shame in taking it and saving the tens of, or more often, hundreds of thousands of dollars it costs to have a permanent roof over your head.
Ignoring the already mentioned issue of indigenous land return. Just because it’s free doesn’t mean it’s cheap, what is the cost of living and what social services are available? Like it can suddenly become very expensive to live there.
What if we did the homestead act but with the government giving everyone NFTs :thinky-felix:

Biden’s at the podium and he rests an elbow on it to be folksy…
“My granddaughter was tellin’ me about the NFTs. And it sounded swell. I don’t don’t know why it’s apes and not bald eagles. Our national bird isn’t apes. Why apes?”
Biden chuckles a little.
“Kids today. I said Flanagan or Finnegan or Hooligan or whatever your name is - I got a plan. The Biden administration is gonna give honest hard-workin’ Americans who qualify the NFT ape that they need because in this difficult time of covid Americans have to have hope. Hope! The BBBN - Build Back Better NFTs will be the homestead act for the 21st century…”
besides the land being obviously stolen kansas is basically a failed state at this point
