Mariupol is the real fight in Ukraine. Kiev is considered the most important battleground because it’s the capitol, but the fiercest fighting is in Mariupol because it is heavily divided between ethnic Russians who want to be part of either the DPR or Russia, and hardcore Ukrainian fascists. A large number of the troops there are actual neonazis and those that aren’t officially part of the battalion, tend to have sympathies. They don’t care about life so they put up artillery positions in residential areas and wait for Russians to bombard them so they can boast that Russians are monsters.
Yeah Marioupol was basically handed to the Azov battalion after the Maidan coup. It legitimately is a city in need of liberation. The Nazis there have not just been hanging out peacefully for the past decade.
Surprisingly still up, basically they were shooting at civilians in 2014 and made Mariupol their base of operations for the next 8 years.
I’m not sure exactly how awful they were to Russians in the city, but the separatists clearly had a decent amount of popular support there before Azov was given control.

I wonder how Russia and Ukraine ended up with so many nazis? Surely they weren’t wrecked by a “defensive” military alliance known for rehabilitating and incorporating former nazis. Surely US intelligence wasn’t going around Europe, giving money and weapons to fascists for the past 80 years.
