I mean, China does have an incredibly long history of bureaucratically-managed society (or at least observed, and of course only to an extent).

But obviously this isn’t about recreating an Amin-grade history, rather an appeal to western tradcaths or whatever. Something to focus your two minutes of hate on, the existence of not-whatever-this-is China (orientalist Mrs Poppins?)

I got one of their youtube ads and was basically in tears laughing trying to explain to my gf how funny this was to me.

My FIL almost got me tickets to this for Christmas because he knew I was interested in Chinese culture. It was a really sweet gesture from someone who didn’t know better, but I am so glad he got me a 100lb magnet instead.

Wait what a 100lb magnet? That sounds sick. Tell us more.

The magnet itself only weighs about a tenth of that, but it supposedly can lift 100lbs! I drag it across local creaks, ponds and quarries. Haven’t found any 100lb pieces of lake garbage yet, but I am absolutely looking forward to the day it happens.

Yeah like is it 100lbs, or can it hold up 100lbs? I’m intrigued by this magnet.

It can hold up to 100lbs! Thankfully, the magnet itself weighs significantly less. I use it to fish garbage out of the creak, mostly, but sometimes you find something cool like a pocket knife or an old BB gun. My goal is to learn to weld so I can use some of the more interesting chunks of metal that I pull for art projects.

Does anyone here know what the average Chinese perception of Falun Gong is? How would the average person react to a Falun Gong ballet being performed in literally every city in the US

My fiance is part of the Chinese diaspora so just one example but almost every one of her friends are the same mix of weird contradictions:

  • support CCP
  • read Epoch Times and share it and similar stuff on WeChat all the time
  • liked Trump alright until he bungled COVID
  • also think COVID was a US bioweapon meant to damage PRC’s reputation
  • 100% unquestioning support for Russian invasion of Ukraine
  • do not care at all that Ukraine has a Nazi problem though, just in favour of war
  • Buddhists, every single one of them…

Though my anecdotes probably mean nothing and I am doing a, uh, my username… Since all anyone running this site can do is go “the science” despite the gray areas of “the science” being clear as day. For some reason that’s worthy of, you know.
