The second biggest party forms a shadow cabinet whose role (theoretically, typically they don’t actually do anything) is to provide direct opposition to their ruling party counterpart.

The chancellor of the exchequer is the minister in charge of the economy.

This is completely wrong.

The shadow minister is like practising to be a real minister, but he doesn’t have enough experience. So he basically goes through the motions of being a minister, in big exaggerated poses, so that he feels comfortable doing minister stuff because honestly he’s quite young and he definitely got picked on in Sixth Form. The House o Lordes is an older lad, a pretty decent guy, and he’ll tell the shadow minister what a good boy he is and what fantastic ministrying he’s doing. When the shadow minister is comfortable enough and he’s got most of the moves down, John Major comes down from Big Ben. He puts a pin on him. Now he’s graduated to become a wood minister, and he’s on his way to becoming a full eagle minister one day.
