A girl came to the register with some essentials for a pet and explained very quietly that she didn’t have much money and asked if there was any kind of discount I could give her. She said she would try her card anyway but it might be declined.
No one was in earshot or eyesight so I told her to just take it. I just started this job too hope I don’t get fired lol

You did a wonderful thing. And even if you somehow do get in trouble, people are desperate for employees right now.
managers tend to think very little of workers anyway, so you can pretty much always just feign incompetence. being “bad” at checking people out isn’t a crime.
people are bad at counting. arithmetic mistakes happen all the time. especially if there’s a lot of food involved.
