Not only that, but there were WAY more people in gulags under the tsar
and way higher mortality rates, only time soviet gulag came anywhere close was during WWII
“Gulag” was basically just the word for “prison”. And I’m pretty sure the percent of the Soviet population that was imprisoned at it’s very peak doesn’t come close to the current US incarceration rate.
Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin were all exiled pre-revolution and essentially had already been through the gulag.
They didn’t care before and they don’t care now. Just like it doesn’t matter that the Soviet prison system steadily got reformed and better over the course of the its existence while almost every other developed country’s got worse and more monstrous over the same period.
