Restrictions on the US House speaker and family members come in response to her visit to Taiwan
Beijing has decided to sanction Nancy Pelosi and her immediate family over her trip to Taiwan this week, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson announced on Friday.
The US House speaker’s trip to Taiwan was an “egregious provocation” and because of this, “China decides to adopt sanctions on Pelosi and her immediate family members in accordance with relevant laws” of the country, the spokesperson said in a statement.
Pelosi traveled to the self-governed island “in disregard of China’s grave concerns and firm opposition,” the statement read.
Her visit “gravely undermines China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, seriously tramples on the one-China principle, and severely threatens peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait,” it added
Targeted sanctions against American oligarchs in the Biden regime 😔
China should send one of their higher-up politicians to Hawaii to discuss Hawaii’s right to freedom and democracy with the Hawaiian governor. It’s only fair, right?
I don’t think the majority of Hawaiians want to be independent.
Which makes it a perfectly fine analogy because the majority of Taiwan residents don’t want to be independent either. Most prefer to maintain the status quo, either indefinitely or until a later decision on independence or reunification.
Recently I watched an incredible documentary about US imperialism of the Hawaiian islands made by a native Hawaiian director, it’s called Cane Fire. Very very highly recommend
I’m very interested in this topic because one thing I would love to learn more about is the role of Christian missionaries in colonialism and imperialism. Growing up, missionaries were depicted as these courageous men who cared deeply for the indigenous people they were living with. Of course it’s bullshit but I’d like the details of the bullshit. Hawaii in particular seems to have negatively impacted by missionaries.
This movie looks specifically at the colonization of Kaua’i, but your missionaries in this movie are Hollywood movie directors. He explores how cultural depictions of native Hawaiians drove their social subjugation, and vice versa.
The driving narrative of the movie is a search for a banned 1930s silent film about native Hawaiian laborers burning a Dole sugar plantation to the ground and killing their overseers, called Cane Fire
At times it was heartbreaking but it was a really beautifully rendered and staunchly :amerikkka: film
To give you a little sense of the mindset those missionaries, this is a tree they introduced to Hawai’i from South America:
https://dlnr.hawaii.gov/hisc/info/invasive-species-profiles/long-thorn-kiawe/
They spread it around most of the islands intentionally to punch through the feet of Native Hawaiians in order to passively enforce Western dress standards. The spines can be 3 or more inches long and are almost as hard as metal. The tips are razor sharp and can go straight through the bottom and up through the top of your foot, even with light footwear.
Their origin is well-known in Hawai’i, and the missionaries are often cursed when anyone gets one of these through their foot. In general “the missionaries” is a stand-in for the early period of social and political domination from the West.
I forgot where I heard/read it, maybe TrueAnon or something, but i think missionaries “unofficially” colonized Hawaii for decades before the the US government swooped in to annex and occupy Hawaii on behalf of the white colonizers
China could also send the PLA navy to do “freedom of navigation missions” near US shores
Sanction California, Mr. China. She’d be out fast if her base was threatened. Plsplsplsssss.
California is where Chinese oligarchs send their children for school though.
Sanction American ice cream.
Haven’t they started to not send them to the US though? I thought I read recently that Chinese universities are catching up to US universities in terms of perceived prestige among the Chinese populace
Death to America
Secondary sanctions please mr. Xi, make the US business world avoid her like the plague. Make her investments in a company a toxic death sentence.
Interesting, China waited until Trump was on his way out of office to sanction Pompeo/Bolton/Bannon… :thinkin-lenin:
I guess you’re hinting at the obvious, Dems are going to lose the midterms. But I imagine a part of the calculation also is how capable people in the executive vs legislative branch are or retaliating. Probably much easier within the executive branch since they actually implement sanctions and stuff. Pelosi might be able to whip her caucus into retaliatory sanctions, but the senate could block it, or Biden could just ignore her (and given that he allegedly hated this trip he just might).
If the Prisdent is Biden whats he going to do to stop Pelosi. Ask her not to go? He’s deeply unpopular he’s not going to threaten vetoing the few bills that reach his desk
