I do not know what the third vegan struggle session will be over, but the fourth will be nutritional yeast and crickets - Albert Einstein

It’s super entertaining to have drama with literally no stakes whatsoever.

Going into the exploding comment sections feels like entering a mosh pit

i watch them argue and i laugh, knowing that cultured meat at large scale is already expanding at an extreme rate in china and will likely overtake traditional meat production in a decade or so with the benefit of extremely low land use for how many calories are produced while harming no animals.

oh youre saying no society has ever been fully vegan? :some-controversy:

cheer for comrades in china solving ethical issues with meat consumption

can’t cheer for comrades in china because they’re not comrades, they’re larpers due to meat consumption

Maybe this is kind of gross and weird, but I once had an idea for a startup involving lab grown meat where rich ghouls with too much money could pay top dollar to engage in “ethical cannibalism” by eating meat grown from the cell cultures of famous people. It would be called “Celebrity Skin”, and people could order stuff like uhhhh Kobe (Bryant) steaks, and other clever puns on celebrity names that I’m not clever enough to think of.

This is clearly a joke OF COURSE but I could totally see something similar being a real thing someday.

i read a short story that involved that. its definitely gonna be a really weird bootleg thing that will pop up as a result of this tech. though people already do that shit with blood and pee so… :hillary-disgust:

stem cell research is really fascinating. i hope they refine it before im too old to get pregnant. personal dream of mine is to be the first amab trans woman to get pregnant lmao. some doc claimed its probably possible now if you had someone crazy enough to be the first person to do it and there was no legal or financial issues stopping you. im baby crazy enough for that shit

counterpoint: do you not want to taste the most forbidden meat of all? same cost per unit as other cultured meat & can be obtained with consent. And you might get free prions as a bonus!

Might not just be a dream people are already talking about it and making BS startups claiming they’ll do it. One of our favorites from nonce island, Richard Dawkins, made a fuss about it a few years ago.

No shit? Outstanding news. This saves China a lot of valuable arable land that can be better used for more beneficial projects.

Another win for scientific socialism.

cells still obviously need some calories to grow but iirc they made some really weird concoction from plants that grow like weeds and then put it in a weird salt mix and the cells eat it up. big benefit there is those are plants we cant eat or digest easily but we can eat and digest that meat it produces from it.

Very interesting material, do you have any primary source materials (or secondary since it’s probably in Chinese) so I can read up more on it? I might forward it to my party’s agricultural commission, or just share it as cool cutting-edge stuff for agitprop.

you can get a fancy lab grown chicken meal in hong kong restaurants for 20 bucks now. its here already just its slow as fuck in the USA because of entrenched capitalists. in china however theyre always looking for ways to make food cheaper, safer, and more efficient.

20 bucks for a meal is (for the next few months lmao) still pretty expensive

no hate but it doesnt inspire much confidence unless its been consistently been going down in price

Well, China basically invented the concept of imitation meat, so I suppose it’s only fitting China would be spearheading lab grown meat as well.

I feel like I don’t hear much news about the latest happenings about lab-grown meat. Is this actually something that seems legit to have at scale across the world within that time frame, or is this just something that’s gonna be promised regularly for decades and always behind schedule? I feel like that shit happens all the time with technological advancements, idk.

Also, the promise of lab-grown meat should not preclude someone who wants to make more ethical choices from going vegan. Tbh, I’ve seen so many comments over the years from people who seem reachable who concede that they want to make more ethical choices, but then follow that up with “but I’ll just wait for lab-grown meat”, and that’s a real bummer.

However, I still very much welcome lab-grown meat because it would be vastly more ethical than real meat and hopefully get rid of the scourge of animal agriculture/factory farming for good.

i mean yeah i dont hate on people that are vegan, its just in order to make society vegan you are gonna have to do a huge material push and if you have alternatives that makes it far easier. im not vegan myself but 85% of the time i functionally am vegan due to ptsd and anxiety making me rely on prefab meal replacement shakes which tend to be vegan. other times its usually like, milk or eggs or beans or something cheap like that because im not the richest. cooking just really takes it out of me.

and of course relying on individual decisions to end an industry has never worked ever. and neither has a fully vegan society existed, not that it precludes it. if vegan meal replacement shakes didnt exist id be mostly drinking milk. its a material thing for me.
