The only thing I can think of is semiconductor chips. They fucked up some time ago with privatization and the consequences were that they were now severely behind Taiwan. Recently they e made some interesting progress but not enough to disrupt the race.
Im not sure if you heard but they found a Chinese made bitcoin miner on a 7nm node, the Chinese govrrment apparently just offered the engineers at nivida and amd very generous compensation packages like way back in 2014 and I think they are like 2 years behind the west now on silicon tech, another poster was saying that cpu and node shirkage for cpu stalled out for a bit since cringo currency was making money hand over fist, they shifted internally engineers to make gpus better at mining.
