I recently posted a thread saying The Wire hbo tv series was not to my tastes and that while I recognize it’s artistic merit towards the television medium, i found it boring and slow and preferred shows like The Sopranos and Breaking Bad.

Got a bunch of comments along the lines of “lol u just can’t handle how cerebral it is, why don’t you go watch law and order or something more your speed.”

Being elitist about pop media like TV shows is bewildering to me, but reddit has managed to do i

It’s just people online. People in real life don’t give a shit about what media you watch. You’re not going to get your teeth kicked in because you thought Avatar was a white savior film.

Liking The Sopranos but not The Wire is kinda weird imo. They’re good for the same reasons

Not really. They have some of the same beats, but the wire is more about the drug game, and it’s intricacies in Baltimore. I don’t find street drug life all that compelling because unfortunately I’ve been a cocaine addict before, a show about that is not really compelling to me. The Sopranos is more about organized crime and I liked the Characters more

I guess I don’t owe anyone an explanation about why I. Prefer a capitalist treat over another, but there’s my logic.

Every single aspect of human existence in western culture is seen through the lens of consumption. As such, the human instinct to find a tribe can only be defined through consumption. What shows we like and what brands we wear define our identity. So any attack on those defining cornerstones, real or not, is met with hostility. You aren’t explaining your personal experience, you’re attacking my tribe. If you don’t like what I like, you’re the other. You’re not a member of my tribe, and I’ll dismiss your opinion in the most belittling way possible because that makes me feel better about my own tastes.

Or at least that’s my take on it.

Pretty much hit the nail on the head I think one of the best comments so far. I’ve had a couple people even on this site in this thread not able to understand how I don’t enjoy something they find to be great. Of course the people on reddit were far worse about it

I didn’t think The Wire was particularly cerebral (it certainly had some characters who were written to be “smartass guys in offices (ecological niche)”), the main thing I found The Wire to be was depressingly real about shit. Absolutely not a show for everyone.

Kind of why I didn’t like it all that much. A decent chunk was about the drug game and street life. I’ve been an addict to a substance before and the drug street life portion of the show was just not that compelling to me.

Sopranos is about mobsters, I’m not a fucking monster obviously so that aspect fascinated me. I also liked Tony as an anti-hero over probably any character in the wire.

Edit:Also the Sopranos 🔚 ng was perfect.
