Ukraine has 1/3rd of the arable land in the EU area. It was majority state owned and operated as one of the hold overs from the collapse of the USSR. The sale/privatization of these assets was banned in 2001 and the west’s attempts to influence this has played a part in everything leading up to the war in Ukraine. The maiden revolts, all of it. The privatization and, what’s the word, 3rd-world-ization of Ukraine was a major push of the west. They want imperial super profits and a large ground down proletariate near the rest of Europe.
