One of the rare instances of a community backlash being so effective that it not only prevents the thing from getting worse but actually makes it better. RPG nerds, have you considered a communist revolution?

This is a pretty big deal. Releasing the 5e under CC makes any future attempts to revoke the OGL pointless, and gives permanent protection to a lot of TTRPG tropes that originated in D&D.

Funnily enough, it also means that people can now publish 5e-compatible products that have “compatible with D&D” on the cover. The OGL includes an agreement to not claim compatibility, so this move does allow creators to more explicitly market their products.

Yes, but the OGL has a clause about waiving that right.

So, by using Open Game Content and the OGL to publish a D&D-compatible product, you could only do so without claiming compatibility (although you can say things like d20-compatible or 5e-compatible.)

I believe we are moving naturally and inevitably from “why we should have socialism” zeitgeist to “how we have socialism” zeitgeist.

This is good, but people interested in D&D really should try Pathfinder.

Personally, after decades of mostly playing D20 systems, I’m mostly interested in playing Runequest/BRP based systems or trying out other new games. There are a whole lot of options out there that aren’t D&D.
