I saw my coworker’s phone the other day and it had like four or five cameras on it and it blew my mind. Why are there FIVE cameras?!?! :what

they use software tricks to combine the inputs of the multiple cameras to create better images

kinda like why you have two eyes!

:shocked-pikachu: can you take 3D pictures now?! I am so out of the loop with tech lmao.

I’m not sure about 3D but each camera can have different focal lengths which lets you have more in focus I imagine? I haven’t investigated the combining part very much

They actually do capture depth info now that can be converted into 3D layers, not completely accurate but I think iPhones can make 3D wallpapers from your photos now by default

The one in the thumbnail actually has a 0.7x, 1x, 3x and 10x. They are all actually very useful.

Eventually the 3x and 10x can be combined into a variable zoom lens (or at least 2-5x)

The 0.7x and the useless macro lenses have been combined and actually produce good results now.

Phones are a thousand times better at capturing bugs, wildlife, nature, sports, etc now than they were before. You can take photos of the moon and the milky way Galaxy that look awesome.

So it’s ultra-wide/macro, wide, telephoto and extreme telephoto. It’s very useful because at 16-20x the image on your phone at a normal viewing distance will look roughly as large as it did to your eyes, it’s like holding a pane of clear glass.

I just wish they had more of a natural background blur. Normally I’ll bring my Galaxy instead of my DSLR for wildflower shots because they’re on par for close-ups, but my best photo’s background is ruined because they use some shitty filter in lieu of actual depth perception.

Yeah, that’s the one thing they’ll never really be able to do because of the sensor size limitation. They’ll just get better at faking it

Can’t change focal length, camera modules are cheap-ish, stick new camera for every zoom imaginable

$1000 phone can’t even manually change exposure and other normal camera features. You have to buy a separate app for it lol
