Depends on where you live but when you fill out the form it can take as long as 6 months. Also I recommend going straight to the government website and checking instead of relying on a law firm to get it for you since the law firm will ask you for a finders fee that you don’t need to actually pay if you do it on your own. Sometimes law firms will scour the records and send out letters to people who have property, which is a convenient notification since you can just finish the process on your own when they send you the property id.
It’s property that belongs to you, such as if a bank closes your account and you don’t transfer the money out. In these kinds of cases the bank (or whatever entity) is legally required to turn it over to the state, and you’ll have to fill out a form online and they’ll send you a check.
Of course, you’ll want to look it up yourself rather than follow a random ad that may or may not be full of shit
