We have learned that they have no bottom in how far they are wiling to go.
We have DeSantis officials waving mockingly as LGBTQ people leave the state.
We have travel advisories for parts of the country.
What other word am I to use?
…
I mean, good. Call it what it is.
But remember that concentration camps at the border are still there even after people correctly started calling them concentration camps.
I’ve been reading a lot about the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft lately and it’s maddening how the fascist rhetoric regarding queer people is nearly identical to what was going on then, this time with a little less anti-semitism. At least this time there isn’t any singular queer library of alexandria to burn since research has gone fairly global.
Also, I’ve been hearing recently, though I can’t remember the exact bills involved, that Florida is moving towards effectively making it a sex crime to be trans in public, making sex crimes against children a capital offense, and now reducing the required votes to enact the death penalty from unanimous among a jury to 8 of 12. Things are getting pretty fucking scary, we may actually be crossing the line of the first UN definition of genocide here in a year or two.
It certainly helps that nowhere in the US do they actually teach that that’s how the Holocaust started.
According to my U.S. history class, the Holocaust only targeted Jews and “political dissidents” (don’t worry about what politics specifically they believed in). It would maybe be mentioned that they killed gay men too, but only as an explanation for why pink is now considered feminine.
The thing that blew me away was actually learning about the book burnings. In school I was taught about them as the Nazis burning “books they disagreed with”, completely glossing over what those books actually were. Usually in those classes you see the very famous photos of the book burnings. It was several years later and years into my transition before I found out that the first of those book burnings, the ones we all see pictures of, was the Nazis burning the entire contents of the Institute für Sexualwissenschaft.
I wonder if anyone here has gone all data hoarder on keeping copies of research on/by queer people. I know for me and my partner, our personal library has grown to include as many banned books as possible and we have a local librarian who’s a comrade and runs a banned books display there. But I don’t know how to target research like that. Aside from just going full Aaron Swartz and downloading the majority of all studies ever published, I don’ t know how to target this specific body of research.
I probably don’t know what I’m talking about but I feel like unless something insane happens like the entire West goes fully mask off, arm bands and sieg heils fascist that there isn’t a risk of research being destroyed. I know contrary to the saying that things on the internet aren’t permanant, but it would take a pretty dramatic turn to delete all research papers and academic journals related to queer people. That being said, you certainly got me thinking about it. I was thinking of setting up a home server some day anyway.
Uh what the fuck do you mean “defending the use of”?
I mean that in a good sense. Does it come off like she’s excusing terrorism or something? Should I rephrase?
i understood what you meant but maybe just add who she’s defending it from in the title? like “from deniers” or something, idk
No it comes off as you implying that it is somehow a misapplied term.
I am getting the impression that I am wrong here but the way you worded it really set off alarm bells.
