It does have an API. There are already apps including an official Android one. The web frontend probably also uses it. Plus it’s ActivityPub

I think it’s more to do with with personal drama in that specific subreddits mod team than anything else. All the other big subs are still shut down. Reddit won’t want to forcefully open them, it’s bad PR. For now, they’ll just wait it out like their leaked memo said. If the subs are still shut down by the end of the month, that will be a different story
