“Prigozhin has not actually launched a coup against the Russian government but protesting in such a way to express his dissatisfaction toward top Russian defense officials and to demand better treatment for the Wagner group”

“Quelling the revolt in such a short period of time actually consolidated the authority of the Putin administration, which has little impact on the frontline battlefield between Russia and Ukraine”

“Those events could push Putin to accelerate the end of the Russia-Ukraine conflict to avoid similar risks, and further strengthen ties with neighboring countries such as Belarus and Kazakhstan”

Traditionally a coup attempt can go either way. It’s a wonderful excuse to crack down and purge dissent, while also rallying support from your partisans by telling them that their enemies are all around and they need discipline and conviction to protect the state/volk/Sparkle Motion/whatever.

Prigozhin has not actually launched a coup against the Russian government but protesting in such a way to express his dissatisfaction

Peacefully protesting by shooting down seven top of the line attack helicopters.

I think putsch, strike, protest, something like that is better than coup here.

What’s not in the argument is tacticool analysis.

5000 wagner guys versus the 25000 moscow cops lol? Unthinkable. And the idea of them squaring off the guys who provide all their supplies and weapons and are like 50 times larger

Also they didn’t shoot down seven helicopters they shot down one and trashed 7 parked ones.

also shot down a plane gotta mention the plane. really like a weird mercenary strike to me. there’s violence from armed strikes if they’re met with violence. nobody at all implied this was a peaceful protest

I don’t think we actually have confirmation that any of these happened besides dubious videos and claims posted to Telegram. Peskov officially stated that there were zero deaths. We’ve seen no bodies and as far as I’m aware there’s been no crash site photography, typically civilians are first on scene to downed aircraft and take a lot of pictures.

They might be real but also seems a bit murky.

Yeah everyone has been going off OSINT accounts today and you can tell a lot of people have gotten their hands on the completely unsourced proclamations they do for the first time

Oh the absolute most common thing you can assume people do is call every downed equipment burned, with all crew dead.

A jet? Probably survived. Helicopter? I’m assuming you’re so fucked. So so fucked. Jesus. Tank? Everyone survived, usually kills the javelineers & remains mobile (the videos of it are brutal, I don’t recommend looking that up)

Helicopters can soft land sometimes. There’s a technique called autorotation where the rotors are allowed to spin freely after the loss of engine power, slowing the descent of the helicopter and allowing for a controlled landing. It’s not 100%, but it’s a standard emergency technique. The wiki says some guy managed to do it from 12.5km up when his engine flamed out climbing to a world record altitude.

Less of a coup, more of a mutiny

i think this kind of thing was pretty common back when armies were mostly paid mercenaries

when armies strike, they don’t stop working. they just turn around

The speed of the turnaround from people here posting about how this was absolutely fucked and they were terrified that Russia was much more unstable than they imagined to, “actually this shows that Russia is very stable and patriots are in control!” is pretty funny.

There is no throughline between other posters and me. I have quite literally been drinking on the beach throughout this. This is the Global Times quoting an analyst.

If this is the first time you noticed the people here are still in the Associated Press discourse zone, but just filtering it through a critical lens, well, expect this to happen in the future. A critical lens only gets you so far. You’re still led around by the nose.

There is precedent for it though. The coup against Erdogan that may have been caused by him intentionally effectively consolidated his power and prevented any chance of anyone else doing it. If a coup fails, it tells everyone else that there is too much support in leadership for one to succeed.

So, it can be fucked up that it was happening (Putin calling it 1917 again) while simultaneously the fact they addressed it quickly means that the outcome has strengthened their position. If the west was hoping that collapse of Russia was the only way to win this war what just happened means nobody else is going to try their luck at a coup. The people, the military and the intelligence ghouls all supported Putin and the current military leadership.

there was definitely something up with that. The turkish army has the constitutional authority to overturn the government if they fill in the right form so it’s weird the way that went down
