Hi! I’ve been looking for a place to find articles that have a Marxist (and perhaps Leninist) perspective, and ran into this one. I’ve only read a few articles, so I’m still not entirely sure about their perspective. They have a quite cheap monthly magazine, but don’t really want to pay if it turns out to be some Ultra-left stuff, as that is not quite my vibe. I would also appreciate alternatives if you have any! I’m really just interested in perspectives and news that are not caked in western propaganda like the more mainstream ones. Thanks in advance!

Oh yeah, that was the one I read Why Socialism by Einstein on at the start of my path into socialism. I will take a look! Don’t know why I hadn’t thought to look at the site more, I think I might’ve thought it was just an archive. Appreciate it comrade!

Each article of the issue is released for free on the website by the month after. But their subscription price is so cheap. I used to read the articles at the end of each month, but just got a subscription since they’re the only ones who have a reasonable Canadian subscription cost. Also like that they avoid the more navelgaze-y shit the other Left/Marxist mags tend to get into a lot of the time.

I’m subscribed to it and I think it’s really good! They get writers from all around the world and I really like how the magazine frequently has articles from places you might not hear much about otherwise. They’re definitely not ultras either; I think the general views of the magazine are pretty close to this site actually (pro-AES, pro-LGBT)

Alright, I’ll have a look then! $2.5 a month is worth the try anyway. Appreciate the response!

What even is “ultra-left”? I hear people talk about ultras sometimes but I thought it was like “Everyone who drives faster than me is a maniac/everyone who drives slower than me is a moron” thing where Ultra is just someone who wants to abolish more private property than I do or something.

I welcome other people to answer here, as my understanding is not so developed that that I will just answer this without a disclaimer, but from my understanding it is who Lenin criticized in his work, “Left-wing” Communism: An infantile disorder. They are the left in communism, and are often very critical of MLs, The USSR, and many AES nations. Often completely anti-Stalinist, and very critical of the Bolsheviks. They often want a perfect revolution, and want an instant transition into worker rule, without the vanguard. MLs like me view this as ahistorical, as the need to defend against counter-revolution, and sabotage has been necessary, and therefore a certain amount of authoritarian measures must be taken.

I think that’s an okay explanation? But I welcome any corrections!

So some archaic factionalism shit from centuries ago that no one should care about?

You could maybe argue this, but once you get into magazines, and actual orgs and such, you will still find ultras ready to say that no AES is actually socialist, the USSR was an evil empire, and other counterproductive things, that I personally think undermines the actual achievements of these nations, and really just serves to hurt the cause at large.
