I’m a geologist and climatologist and I do not really do this kind of stuff BUT I do find it super cool, so if you are building a world and have a map you’d like for me to look at I can give you tips for realistic climate placement based on geography and shit like that

Oh gosh i have a world map (welp globe) but i said to myself that geography and tectonics are way too difficult to implement truthfully >.< looking back id really want to retro-fit them. Atleast i got köppen classification correctly following geography and climate patterns.

There’s very little about tectonics that you could call not truthful tbh. Earth is just one planet in the whole universe and there are likely far more and far less extreme tectonic systems out there than our own. Geography is a lot more tricky but you can set up at least close to accurate climates even on non-earthlike planets. I’ll take a look if you want!

Thanks! Unfortunately i dont really have a great way to show you. The only “canon” up to date map i have i drawn with pencils on a wooden sphere 4 cm wide lol. So no notes on the side to tell you what it means. I can still send it but im really more bothered about tectonics and the fact this follows no geography rules than climate and biomes.

What would be your thoughts on Artifexan’s guide to climate zones?

It’s a great video and definitely is correct on placement of all of the climate zones it covered!

I love worldbuilding exposition but recognize the danger of it getting in the way of a good story. Avatar: The Last Airbender is probably the best recent example of a fantasy setting which organically weaves the worldbuilding into its narrative without being a drag on the narrative. Korra’s worldbuilding on the other hand is a goddamn mess because Bryke were radlibs who understood the necessity of a bourgeois revolution against feudalism but couldn’t write socialists or anarchists to save their lives.

You’re not alone. I don’t know if you’ve come across her before, but Worldbuilding notes has an excellent channel, which is basically just her being an awesome creator goddess in the most charming way possible.

A world without a sun to heat it? Does it revolve around a rogue gas giant like Jupiter instead, by any chance? That’s the only alternative I can think of. https://www.firstpost.com/tech/science/tidal-heating-explains-why-jupiters-moons-are-far-hotter-than-researchers-expect-8815191.html

I’ve been playing around with this idea of writing about the development of early agricultural society in a world with a soft magic system based around theory and praxis. Basically, any trade/skill can be magically enhanced as long as you have a working theory of why/how things are happening and then being able to put that to practice. Which means that while you can have far out and unscientific explanations for why something works, it needs to be close enough to reality so you can get your shit to work at least once for the magic to gel. I kind of want to explore how magic will shape the material conditions and power structures of the world as sedentary civilization forms, and how those will in turn impact the forms of magic that is practiced. It’s always bugged me how in so much of fantasy you have “basically medieval Europe but with mages” and that’s it.

Emh isnt that the definition of science. Artisans had material understanding of their craft without a scientific method for millennia.

Kind of? A magic artisan can have a theory system of knowledge for why heating and rapid cooling a piece of steel produces a harder tool. This may include spiritual or religious beliefs which will impact how the magic manifests. But what he must do first is produce an actually hardened piece of steel. The way I envision things is there being a dialectic between the depth of the understanding on a scientific level and the freedom of the magic. If an arisan had modern metallurgical knowledge he’d have a more powerful magical control over the physical properties, but woulnd’t be able to imbue the aura of the Weeping Sun or whatever.

What does the magic do then, cos simply saying “i know heat hardens metal so i will heat metal to harden it” isnt exactly magic thats just understanding cause and effect haha
