Lets learn from Allende. Do not let them get away with it. Do not let them get out of the country. Round them up do what needs to be done.

This doesn’t make sense in the bolivian context the way it did in the Venezuelan context.

Politics in Bolivia re: Morales vs Mesa is mostly andean indigenous left populism vs spanish and amazonian indigenous third way social democracy.

Any attempts at purging of opposition would very likely just result in the country splitting into 2 and that’s what the US has been trying to make happen since Morales first came into power in 2006.

I think the Venezuelan example is less about purging your political opposition (Guaido is after all, still able to run around pretending to be President without any punishment) and more about removing disloyal elements within the Military, and entrusting domestic security to mass armed militias.

A large reason why the coup occured in the first place was that the opposition to Morales was repeatedly unable to get him out through electoral means.

I didn’t word it properly, which is that the Venezuelan right is evenly distributed through the country as is the left. In Bolivia, it’s essentially Santa Cruz vs the andean communities rather than being clean ideological politics.

Guaido not getting what he deserves is necessary. Alive he’s a fucking joke. Dead he’s a martyr. I really hope Maduro is doing everything he can to protect him.

Anyhow, so happy right now.

Of course, that regional devide makes sence. It’s a delicate situation. MAS is gonna have to be smart specially handeling the military, i would think. The next couple of months could be tense. But figures like Camacho and Áñez surely need to face some sort of consequences.

I honestly hope so. This events clearly changed some things because the criticisms of Evo from the left subsided and the left were able to coalesce. The real problem was clear, lets see if they can finish it off.

From a tactics standpoint, I think there need to be real, open, transparent trials.

They need to heavily publicize what happened, selectively invite global observers, and have speedy but fair trials. There can be no question that those who are imprisoned and the select few who are sentenced to death deserve it. The violence must be justified in the eyes of the world, if possible.

I think it would be a mistake to have hasty show trials and mass executions, which seems to be implied by your comment.

This guy made a series of posts on neoliberal about how Venezuela was due to fall in 1 or 2 months, about 6 months ago. He was so sure MAS wasn’t going to win as well!

It took the mainstream media just a few hours to start covering the previous Bolivian elections as “fraudulent” or “suspicious”. Most of them haven’t even mentioned Bolivia today.

Yeah they’re pretty purposely not mentioning it. I’ve been watching mainstream news sites and haven’t really found a single mention of them yet.

An article about it is featured prominently on The Guardian’s website, but I checked and nothing about Bolivia is (as of this comment) on the home page of the MSNBC, CNN, Fox, or HuffPo websites. Both RT and WaPo have articles that are fairly buried about it on their respective sites.

edit: but the Guardian article is fairly high up when an American checks Google News without cookies, so there’s that.

Post memes, art, articles, questions, anything you’d like as long as it’s about Latin America. Try to tag your posts with the language used, check the tags used above for reference (and don’t forget to put some lime and salt to it).

Here’s a handy resource to understand some of the many, many colloquialisms we like to use across the region.

“But what about that latin american kid I’ve met in college who said that all the left has ever done in latin america has been bad?”
