The horse archers thing sounds far fetched but someone literally got shot with a crossbow near my place about 3 weeks ago so who knows.

Gladius was usually worn as a backup, so you could throw a javelin and then pull it

That and they were used with a massive shield that was generally meant to be used in a phalanx.

Spearmen/pikemen directly behind the shield wall and if they get past the spears/pikes there’s a wall of shields and gladii to deal with
