Always blows my mind that there’s literally several dozen of these giant, futuristic cities in China that most people in the US or the EU have never even heard the name of. You could tell somebody in my country about Chongquing and they’d probably go “are there any major cities nearby?” because all they know are Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong and the rest of the country must be some rural backwater that you could paint on a porcelaine vase.
I was blown away by ChongQing when i first heard of it, and then I started looking up videos, then you watch videos of Shenzen, & Shanghai, and all illusions of western superiority just vanish from your mind.

Chongqing sounds like a racist impersonation of a Chinese person to people who don’t know anything about China. People look at you like you’re making it up when you talk about it.

Shanghai is an amazing city. I will say not all of it is like this, the further west you go you can find lots of pockets of old Shanghai.
