I like to examine the biographies of violent criminals and realize that capitalism is responsibly for at least 80% of them

Same here. I’ve known people who moved towards leftism as a result of what they were learning from true crime. It also demonstrates how the system is set up to make this crime occur.

One of the biggest things for me is how everything true crime related on TV comes from an emotional argument which is what leads most people in favor of the death penalty. It’s always talk about how we need to be tougher on crime so the victims can have justice. Never talks about preventing the crimes from occurring again or improving material conditions.

If you haven’t already seen it, check out I Am A Killer on Netflix.

It’s a documentary show where each episode is about a different death row inmate with their story told mostly through their perspective.

Very heartbreaking stuff. The majority of them are sympathetic and it’s awful how much sexual abuse comes up.

When the mood hits me. I’m more an occult/paranormal/spooky things kinda guy, but there can be some overlap between that and true crime that really hooks me. True crime is also tough because it’s, well, true which can make it painful.

Alright let’s see… since this is videos, here’s some recents and favorites:

  • This is kind of a “spooky music mystery”, Pad Chennington’s deep dive into the mystery around bandcamp vaporwave artist Begotten. He’s currently at part 2 of a promised 3, and its a very satisfying mix of music review, true crime-ish mystery, and spooky vibes.

  • KrainaGrzybow is a really spectacular arthouse-style ARG miniseries thats like… 95% in Polish? I can’t really do it justice, just turn on captions and enjoy a trip. Here’s the first episode

  • Petscop is well finished by now but was really great, and the best take on the concept of “haunted/evil video game”… probably ever? Check it out

Me. I’ve been into it my whole life. Also love my fair share of Noir and thriller fiction.

One thing I noticed in true crime growing up was how the class war is definitely real. Missing persons and murder cases involving the poor and vulnerable often go unnoticed by mainstream media, while we will get anniversary editions of cases like JonBenet and Maura Murray. The Asha Degree case is a great example of how this works. It has a following online but most people outside that area of Ohio had never heard of it cause the media rarely covered it.

Breadtube if it didn’t suck.

Post videos you genuinely enjoy and want to share, duh. Celebrate the diversity of interests shared by chapochatters by posting a deep dive into Venetian kelp farming, I dunno. Also media criticism, bite-sized versions of left-wing theory, all the stuff you expected. But I am curious about that kelp farming thing now that you mentioned it.

Low effort / spam videos might be removed, especially weeb content.

There is a cytube that you can paste videos into and watch with whoever happens to be around. It’s open submission unless there’s something important to commandeer it with at the time.

A weekly watch party happens every Saturday (Sunday down under), with video nominations Saturday-Monday, voting Monday-Thursday. See the pin for whatever stage it’s currently in.
