“Wow dad that’s so interesting. So are you going to stop eating meat and start riding transit?”
I thought we were against putting the responsibility of climate change onto individuals?
Individuals abstaining from meat is not going to stop climate change lmao.
Individuals abstaining from meat won’t, but ending animal agriculture (at least to the extent it happens now) has to happen one way or the other or we’re fucked, and the more people who eat meat, the harder it is to do that.
I mean, even as a disgusting dirty awful omni I agree that the meat industry would have to be significantly scaled down, to the point where its not even an “industry” anymore really, though I’m not sure sure its as huge a part of the climate change problem as you think it is. But I don’t believe in ethical consumption or consumer activism so I don’t believe whether or not you eat meat has anything to do with whether the meat industry survives.
People (libs especially) usually see these options for dealing with climate change:
-
human extinction due to climate catastrophe? naaaaaaaaaaaaaah
-
global socialist revolution in order to actually steer humanity away from the yawning chasm of destruction (and they view this as a bad ending)
-
tell other people they just have to have personal responsibility and we can all get through this, feel right about that and good about themselves for spreading the word, and all the while they don’t even take responsibility themselves since they enlighten other people, like personal carbon credits
-
dw about it elon musk and his science inventions will save us
You’re right, we have to explicitly fight against that ‘argument’. Even moreso because the climate problem isn’t going anywhere, we need to raise consciousness and spread our ideals, and by eliminating that third option, when left with options 1 and 2, it can be a powerful tool
granted that does still leave you dealing with 4, which is harder to argue against casually due to the density of the topic, 4 is very very incorrect but why it’s incorrect just isn’t very intuitive, which is why it makes for such good ‘sounds right, can’t be disproved’ platitude propaganda libs love so much
its not even just boomers. it’s all libs. its painful. and no acknowledgement that you had been right. no apology for being wrong all these years.
don’t worry, once Biden bombs the atmosphere to block out the sun and cause nuclear winter he’ll believe it was a hoax again without any attempt to connect any dots whatsoever
My dad is a right winger and his thoughts have seemingly evolved as well.
He’s generally a mirror of whatever the general take that fox is putting out is. For years he’s also thought it was a hoax, but now he thinks it’s maybe real but definitely not man made.
just a natural cycle and there’s nothing we can do about it so may as well make some money!
Same with my dad and he lives on the gulf coast, where we get battered with hurricanes. Last year alone was one of the worst years for tropical weather and we ended up getting 3 hurricanes in our area. It took him years to realize it was real, but his view is like other right wingers “there’s nothing we can do about it anyway, so why worry? It’s not really man made either, don’t say that!”
