I was blown away when I discovered how blatantly racist even liberal Europeans are toward Roma. Literally the shit the Nazis said to justify tossing Roma into gas chambers getting massively upvoted on Europe-related subreddits.
I do genuinely believe in two to three generations time, almost all roma will have been assimilated or killed off especially as more in-your-face fascism rises in europe.
Dude Roma survived Porajmos and Soviet assimilation. They’re more resilient than you think. At least I hope so
Sorry, you probably know better than I do. Could have guessed by your name.
Shit sucks.
Hahaha oh don’t get me wrong. We are resilient. But The past couple generations have ramped up wanting their kids to assimilate more and more. It’s not fully a non-Roma issue, but a lot of us willing to let our culture slowly fade out too. But I try to have hope.
EDIT: also we really barely survived the Holocaust. Almost 90% of European Roma were affected, so I worry if something like that ever happened in a more efficient manner, even just for a few months longer… But again. Trying to have HOPE.
I distinctly remember Christian Lindner, the leader of the Liberal-Democratic Party (FDP) of Germany, speaking about standing in line behind some immigrant at the bakery, who spoke German poorly. Lindner then went on to fear monger that he did not know wether that person was a ”highly qualified AI developer from India or wether he was an at best tolerated illegal alien“. And this was no off the cuff comment that blew up, this was part of his speech at the party’s general convention. His leadership position wasn’t even challenged over this. Sure, there was some outrage on the internet over this, but there were no lasting consequences at all.
the left in europe is completely dead and the most progressive people are useless centrists who don’t care about anyone
hard fucking agree. never met a european leftist who didn’t still want to segregate all Roma lol. idk as a gypsy myself i don’t think Americans can barely comprehend the shit we go through.
As someone born and raised on TERF Island, _ Natives: Race and Class in the Ruins of Empire_ by Akala really helped me come to terms with understanding that the U.K. is really not a less racist country than the US, just that the UK’s racism is manifested differently. Also that the notion of Britain being a post-racial society in comparison with its former colony is itself a piece of imperial propaganda to benefit the ruling class.
America is just a particularly successful European project
