It is estimated there are only 250 to 400 Tasmanian azure kingfishers left in the wild.

It is one of 14 birds classified as endangered or critically endangered that does not have a state or national recovery plan.

Tasmania’s Natural Resources and Environment Department says it has identified the bird as a species “where additional information on abundance and distribution is required.”

The plight of the Tasmanian azure kingfisher, a subspecies of those found on the Australian mainland, has been on government radars for more than two decades.

“If we don’t have something like a recovery plan to guide us, we’re just wandering around in the dark, grasping at solutions willy-nilly,” he said.
