I played Fallout 3 when it came out, and just got bored with it fairly quickly. It’s got that Bethesda vibe where everything is great at first, but then you start to get further into the game and everything starts to seem copy+pasted to make the game artificially larger and longer. Is it like that at all? I see it mentioned as a great game all the time, but I also saw that about 3 when it came out.
As a big fan of Fallout 1&2, I liked Fallout 3 more than New Vegas.
Fallout 3 wasn’t Fallout, didn’t feel anything like Fallout, but was a fun distraction if you treated it as its own thing.
New Vegas was a concerted attempt to make a Fallout game out of Fallout 3, and it turned out well enough, but it wasn’t as good as Fallout 1 or 2.
As far as what you’re concerned with the world being samey and boring, it’s definitely a way more varied and interesting. There’s a lot more cool landmarks and visual storytelling to find, and I think the spirit of the game is more in line with Fallout 1 & 2.
Its held up a lot better than 3 has, Obsidian is essentially the better version of Bethesda/Bioware but with a Cassandra curse where their time and budget always gets cut short. But their best work are the games that they made fully in house, The Outer Worlds and Tyranny.
Tyranny was great, a bummer that it didn’t do great so very little chance of getting the sequels. Concept was interesting and the writing was great.
