The problem with America is that some idiot with COVID walks into the gym and everyone else just sort of ignores him, rather than fucking flogging his ass.
There is a marxist explanation, namely the rate of profit is so anemic in the industrial west that even something as obvious as a quarantine and temporary shutdown cannot be done as it is too damaging to what little profit there is. The covid shit is a little microcosm of capitalism response to climate change - complete paralysis and inability to do anything different while retaining the same logic of production.
