Can someone break down why sanctions are bad for me?
Like I know and understand how preventing access to markets can cause death, starvation & misery for the inhabitants of a country, but what I’m not clear on is: is the anti-sanction position that a country has a moral obligation to trade with every country no matter what policies they have?
I’m not defending currently-existing sanctions, nor the motives of those imposing them, but rather asking on a philosophical level if all sanctions are de facto bad. Like would a country be obligated to trade with a fascist regime under this framework? Were boycotts and sanctions of South Africa bad? Would sanctions against Saudi Arabia or Israel be bad?
This is like that Jerky Boys call when Sol tells a lawyer he was driving drunk and wants to the sue the people he hit. And when the lawyer refuses he threatens to sue the lawyer.
Can I sanction you? Sanction everybody…
