Requesting recommendations for crime/detective/pulp thrillers that are left-wing or at least non-CHUD.
I would love a murder mystery where the communist “police” or investigators rather, uncover a huge conspiracy of reactionary fascists that have hidden out for years. Etc.
I guess the first book of the Takeshi Kovacs trilogy - Altered Carbon by Richard K. Morgan - is non-CHUD, as it criticizes billionaires heavily and it definitely has a noir atmosphere mixed with its cyberpunk atmosphere. The noir part disappears from the two following books though.
Also, the trilogy as a whole is definitely leftists as you end up…
Slight spoiler
…following a group of anarchists bent on destroying a multiplanetary oligarchy
Also, even the first book has Quellcrist Falconer and that’s a bad-ass leftist character.
The 1980s show (NOT the Mel Gibson movie) Edge of Darkness is a personal favourite. Ecosocialist daughter of a cop (played by the games keeper from Jurassic Park) gets murdered and he starts investigating, discovers conspiracy about nuclear energy and reprocessing. Also has a CIA agent as a good anti-hero, not in a CHUD way.
Edit: just realised that at the end of that clip there is a pre-grift David Icke talking about sports! Wild. Also, the daughter in the show is played by the lead actress in Willow.
