Annie Oakley is basically regarded as a feminist figure today, but people forget that Oakley lived in a time where there were vocal feminists and she tended to disagree with them publicly. She advocated for equal pay, broke the glass ceiling in male-dominated shooting sports, but opposed women’s suffrage.

The truth is little more unfortunate than mere drugs. The Black Panther Party leadership was highly male-dominated, to the detriment of the safety of women in the movement. BPP Women made many attempts at raising the issue of rampant misogyny and sexual abuse, especially Elaine Brown (her memoir, A Taste of Power, extensively covered this issue, as well as her personal experience of being assaulted by Huey Newton). These brave women were largely ignored.
There is a good primer on how misogyny is weaponized to disrupt leftist movements called Why Misogynists Make Great Informants. Lots of orgs don’t know that shitty men are not worth keeping around, and it leads to cycles of self-destruction that are never comfortable for male leadership to address.
