Spores [she/her]
Maybe an invite system and barrier to entry to people without invites? I def think having it be so easy to create an account and immediately post blurs the line between transphobia/bad faithism/wrecking from external sources vs transphobia from within the community.
For new accounts without invites: 24hr voting cooldown, 48hr posting cooldown + a “new user” flair for the first month + first 50 comments/posts
Accounts with invites: no posting/voting cool down. However there would still be a “new user” flair for the first month+ first 50 comments/posts
Also a “committed user” flair which would be 3+ months, 100+ posts and maybe some sort of screening which would allow this user to invite people.
That way there is a balance between allowing growth and slowing reactionary content and also would help with transparency for when you see a post to know if it’s someone who has barely participated vs a more dedicated user. (And yea it’s kind of maybe not super accurate for lurkers like me but oh well, I enjoy using this site over reddit and don’t want to see it go down)
Yeah, Claire is one of my favorite characters. Unlike others, her background really shapes her worldview and it’s at this point in the story where she cannot just ignore the inequalities and maintain the ambition needed to emotionlessly climb the latter especially when it is at the expense of the less fortunate (quote “No matter how delicious the food was, I wouldn’t be able to enjoy it if the peasants who made it were starving”). I really empathize with that because it similar to a lot how I felt when I became disillusioned with my own work. Like as soon as you kind of recognize the system for what it is, you see the problems everywhere you look and you really start to feel powerless.
I think it could be in contrast with Tachi who has just began to unquestioningly attach himself to a new goal where he has internalized the messaging of space development being a boon to all of humanity as opposed to just a few individuals.
Yeah I’m happy they touched on the fact that temp workers often do not have benefits and have to hold multiple jobs which is pretty spot on for what is happening currently . It’s not explicit but you are able to get the sense that a lot of the main cast are actually pretty privileged due to the inclusion of the undocumented ninjas, temp workers, immigrants fleeing from conflict/preventable poverty.
I mean I agree that banning bigotry should be prioritized but if you have the option to exercise discretion why not do it? Like if there was no way to reasonably check if someone was motivated by transphobia than sure, do a mass ban and let the people caught be caught but we do have an appeal system so it seems weird not to use it especially if it seems wayy more likely that this user is just very petty.
Also maybe chill on the ableism if you’re going to make this point??
I really enjoyed the scene with Yuri and Hachi’s brother where he talked about how the boundary between earth and space is entirely constructed because earth is also a part of space.
I found the scene with Fee and the smoking activist pretty amusing. I don’t really like how self-righteous/one-dimensionally the Space Defense Front is introduced however this episode is clearly intended to be a bit lighter so it makes sense that it’s pushed to the background. This isn’t solely related to this episode but I do enjoy how cozy the debris section office feels with all of the random stuff and animals compared to the rest of the station.
One of my favorite episodes and the start of some character development for Claire. This one always makes extra sad especially at the end where the guy talks about how from space you cannot see any borders and is a reminder of how destructive and meaningless a lot of wars are as well as a look into what “peacekeeping” actually means. Like most of the ‘successes’ in the show, the spacesuit accomplishment is largely symbolic and shows that even when you play by the rules/get extremely lucky you cannot make it as a sanctioned country because it is by design that power/wealth be consolidated in the hands of a few.
Yeah, I find the sitcom-esque depiction of confusing/toxic romances that’s prevalent in a lot of shows frustrating to watch.
I kind of feel a bit bad for Claire though since she doesn’t seem to have any friends. Even though debris section’s work is a lot more labour intensive/dangerous, they at least share some sort of bond/trust whereas she seems to be all alone though it is due partially to her attitude and the competitive nature of the corporate ladder.
Like others have mentioned, it’s not any worse than supporting fast fashion stuff. Buying things that last a long time vs. always replacing things is probably one of the better things you can as a consumer if you have the means to do so.
Have you considered buying 2nd hand luxury? It’s more work to shop for since you’re not able to always choose colors/styles but you’re not directly supporting these companies and it’s slightly more sustainable. It’s what I’ve been doing with heels/boots and I got a pair of fendi booties in great condition that I wear all the time for a fraction of the price.
