Verhoven picked up the novel, read about five pages and threw it out of the window. He wasn’t interested in the least in actual science fiction. And Starship Troopers the novel is definitely science fiction in the proper sense of the word. It is legit literature.
Instead, he made a “parody” movie that most people didn’t get. But hey, at least we got the unforgettable image of Doogie Howser, SS. Yay?
Lots of non-westerners just don’t get the whole Hitler thing. It’s why every so often you’ll see a Hitler-themed bar or uniformed parade in Asia or somewhere. To them, he’s just a would-be conqueror that failed. They have plenty of those in their own culture. Killed a lot of people? Yup. Made things worse for everyone and then killed himself? Yeah. Heck, if you look at western culture until about 1980 or so, it wasn’t that big a deal to us, either. Old board games had swastikas on them as advertisements and the Nazis were just generic villains for kids to beat. Indiana Jones made a career out of them.
Isn’t this why they arranged for Gaddafi to get a knife shoved up his ass?
And why they invaded Iraq in the first place?
I used to have the same problem back in the landline telephone days. I would want to translate my phone number into letters so people could just remember a 7 letter word and call me. But there was always one or more 0s or 1s in the phone number, and those don’t have letters on them.
“Grandpa, why do you say phones had letters on them?” “Because, kid, we used to have this thing called T9 input method.”
That is one handsome devil.
