I learned to code and all I got was an inbox full of spam and no job offers.
Sure anyone can “learn to code” but thats not what software development is. I’m in my final year at university and haven’t taken a “coding” course in two and a half years. Hell, the last time I programed anything was 18 months ago. The real meat of computer science and “coding” is actually a shitload of discrete math thats already super hard to learn in structured classes. Theres no fucking way its realistic to expect someone working two jobs, or even one miserable job, to be able to take the time to teach it to themselves through some bullshit online courses.
“Learn to code” is the biggest fucking neolib scam that exists. Sure you finished the Codecademy python course and it took you days and weeks of effort, but when the interviewer asks “cool, so how could we optimize this to run in O(n * log(n)) time” youre probably gonna be fucked if you havent studied algorithms. How do you know which algorithms to study? You dont. Because they dont teach you that when you learn to “code”. “Coding” isn’t even a real thing. You don’t just learn a language and suddenly magically know how to make everything. Just because I have the entire Java syntax memorized doesn’t mean I can make you shit if I don’t know how the hell to accomplish what youre asking. Its not that fucking simple.
“Coding” also really fucking blows if youre not into it and it still kinda fucking blows if you are. Wanna know what sucks worse than coding, though? Having the code you write make someone else millions upon millions of dollars and seeing only pennies of it. Nothing is more soul-sucking than knowing that 99% of your surplus value is being sucked away as you see another post about how the CEO of your company is on his way to becoming a xnzjcillionaire or whatever the fuck.
Computers are cool if youre into them. Programming can be fun if thats your thing. “Learning to code” while youre already being constantly exploited is a stupid fucking unrealistic expectation that neolibs who know nothing about “coding” invented so that they could sell you dreams, and then exploit you even harder if you achieve them.
Fuck anyone who tells you to learn to code, and fuck me for falling for it. I wanted to be an artist. I wanted to make fucking music. Now I make other people millions for pennies at the cost of my soul.
Amazing world of gumball is actually super based in the later seasons. Pretty lib at times, but all the cops are shown as bumbling, power-abusing fools and they made a whole episode about how electoral politics will be the death of us all because no one is paying attention to issues like climate change.
Cant reccomend this enough. Every season gets better and better. I havent been able to stop listening. Its an “anthology” , bug everything is relevant and almost every question gets answered by the end. It does a really good job of tying into itself and keeping loose ends tied
Sorry for being a lib, but whats the green and blue flag next to the enby one?
The “Bleeps” section is probably one of the biggest fucking circlejerks Ive ever seen. There are some really fucking good recs in there, dont get me wrong, but most of those artists aren’t super accessible to new listeners and tend to attract elitist crowds who like to talk about how advanced their taste is.
It also omits a shitload of what I would consider “essential” electronic music. Though people may not like it, genere’s like dubstep, drum and bass, futurebass, and just bass music in general make up the core of modern electronic music.
Like him or not, Skrillex is one of the most important artists in modern music because of what he did for music. At least one of his albums should be on there. You want to get more artful about it? Fine. Get some KOAN Sound on there instead. Polychrome was a masterpiece, and its ten times more accessible than any squarepusher album. I would say its way more “essential”. Fuck, Ganja White Night’s Hybrid Distillery could even work. It has a really unique and artful feel while embodying the soul of mid 2010’s dubstep.
Also, are they not even going to mention Noisia? Theyre incredible and have had a massive impact on the music world as a whole. Not only do they kill drum and bass, but many other EDM genres as well. Their house is some of the best I know.
Speaking of house, no Deadmau5 or Wolfgang Gartner either? These guys pioneered electro house, and in Wolfgang’s case complextro as well. I know deadmau5 is super basic, but he’s basic for a reason. 4 × 4 = 12 should be on this list.
Straight up omited futurebass as well. Flume’s self titled album is not only killer, but it spawned one of the most successful mainstreme genres that the last decade has seen. You want an essential album? Thats an essential album.
I get that EDM has a lot of subgenres and is very subjective, but thats WHY these albums should be included. They dont have any straight up bangers on that list; most of those are niche, spacey artists who are really good and extremely talented, but not at all representative of what electronic music is. I love a lot of the artists on this list, but to call the lineup here “essential” is to misrepresent electronic music.
Whoever made this list doesn’t enjoy electronic music, they enjoy jerking themself off while thinking about their “superior” music taste.
