My fav quote to use against conservatives. They avoid this entire epistle like the plague. It’s wild to read evangelical explanations of this condemnation of the rich which usually read like “it’s not about all rich people, it’s about these specific heathens who didn’t pay their workers, don’t worry”

It’s doubly funny because the book of James is one of the main sources of the tension between the question of whether “works” (i.e. good deeds) have any bearing on salvation. The Protestant animosity towards the book goes back to Martin Luther who famously called it an “epistle of straw” and wanted it removed from the Bible

My dad had a copy of the manifesto on our bookshelf. I didn’t know much about it and had few preconceptions about the word. Obv there are exceptions, but I think a lot of american people of color don’t grow up with the standard anti-communist indoctrination

It’s all a part of the moral panic the fringe right wing is trying to foment. It’s a trojan horse to push standard conservative values: nuclear family, anti-gay, anti-feminism etc. We can talk about “sexualization” of children and how saturated pop culture is with sexual content but obviously the right should not be setting the terms of that discussion. Also isn’t the movie centered on a black girl? There’s a racial element there that shouldn’t be ignored.

What bothers the fuck out of me is that well-meaning people are getting swept up in the panic about pedophilia that the right is using to tar liberals (and the left by extension). The sad part is that those online shouting out pedophilia probably know an abuser irl and instead choose to larp against hollywood on facebook

My high school AP gov/history teacher partially taught us out of A Patriot’s History of the United States 🙃

His libertarian antics are what started to push me towards the left so I’m not mad

In the Caribbean, particularly Trinidad and Jamaica, thyme is pretty much always paired with cumin or curry powder. The thyme is either added separately or as part of an herb paste. It rounds out strong spices very well imo.

Oregano and cumin is a common combo in many Latin countries. Cuban black beans is great with both.

I assume people called it emo because starting in the 2000s, everyone who wasn’t a pedantic music nerd used emo to refer to anything with highly emotional lyrics
