I’ve heard the exact opposite argument as well though, that putting white people at the front makes them the face of a protest/centers white people.
It’s a pretty common argument at marches ime.
It’s not just optics, and I think the safety argument is a little specious tbh. Cops will blow any protest the fuck up as soon as they can.

I mean I think since white people tend to be more privileged, they have big Karen energy they can use against the cops. Like especially privileged people who have to face injustice for the first time from a situation like this will have a better chance of having the resources and energy to do something about it. And my guess would be cops might actually think a little harder about causing a fight.
I think there’s some merit to the strategy but it’s context dependent, and going overboard means you could end up with like, a crowd of winemoms trying to give the cops a Pepsi or something.
