China isn’t totalitarian. It’s authoritarian. They don’t give a crap what you do in your personal life. Just don’t organize people to overthrow the government and you’re cool.

When I use authoritarian, it’s a neutral term. If something is authoritarian and bad, it’s probably fascist so I’ll say that instead.

Yeah, the state having authority, which is what authoritarian implies, is perfectly in line with Marx’s idea of the transitional state.

Totalitarian is more like the US where everyone lives in a panopticon and it’s constantly feeding days to a global observation system.
