Tupac Shakur was born on June 16, 1971 in New York, the son of an important activist in favor of black rights and a member of the Black Panthers who for his son’s name was inspired by Tupac Amaru II, a revolutionary descendant of the Incas who led a liberation movement in colonial America.

Tupac (aka 2Pac) grew up in the poverty and violence of the streets and as a teenager he entered an art school in Baltimore, where he developed his interest in music and acting. His first professional experience in the world of hip-hop came from the Californian group Digital Underground, who took Tupac on tour as the band’s staff.

The album “2Pacalypse Now” (1991) was the first step in a career in which Tupac combined political and racial allegations with the postulates of the “gangsta” style, a current of rap that aspired to portray misery, violence and racism of the ghettos.

Though the single “Brenda’s Got a Baby” demonstrated his empathy and conscience, the album’s unsparing examinations of street violence and police harassment led to a public condemnation by Vice President Dan Quayle.

This tension would continue to play out over the next five years, as Tupac’s life grew increasingly tumultuous and his popularity escalated. In 1993, Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z., including the hits “Keep Ya Head Up” and “I Get Around,” became his first platinum release. Two years later, following the release of the Thug Life: Volume 1 album (recorded with Thug Life, his group of five MCs), the more somber and reflective Me Against the World reached Number One on the album charts and was nominated for two Grammys.

Things got even bigger in 1996 with All Eyez on Me, Tupac’s best-selling album, which spawned five singles, including two Number One hits, “California Love” and “How Do U Want It.” At the height of his phenomenal success, Tupac’s life was cut short on September 13, 1996 when he was murdered in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas at the age of 25.

After a cyclist has gone two-thirds of their route, they get a puncture. Finishing on foot, they spend twice as long walking as they did riding. How many times as fast do they ride as walk?

I think I finally have a grasp on (one reason) why trade deficits are (or rather, can be) a problem before fiat currency becomes a thing.

It’s literally a liquidity crisis. If the Brits wind up sending all their gold to China on account of Chinese traders not wanting to purchase anything substantial in return, the British economy would grind to a halt. This role of money as an economic lubricant shows up early in Capital.

This is why the opium wars happen. If the Brits can trade huge amounts of opium instead of gold, they don’t have a liquidity crisis.

Am I on the right track here?

yeah you’re bang on point there, and that is exactly why the opium wars happened pretty much

How does the different economic system of premodern states factor into this assessment? Because mercantilism existed during feudalism, when, I imagine, issues with liquidity wouldn’t have been much of a thing as production was pretty much frozen in place in a macro sense as a product of master-subject relations. Correct me if I’m wrong here.

I was thinking there must be other serious consequences of trade deficits since people still seem pretty fussed in our era of fiat currencies.

I’m not sure what those are exactly, but for example if you look at the wikipedia article for the Chinese yuan, Chinese monetary policy seems to be influenced by American desires to shrink their trade deficit.

It actually seems not intuitive if trade imbalances are inherently good or bad. Adam Smith calls the balance of trade doctrine “absurd”. Keynes was pretty concerned with it. I don’t know if Marx has anything to say on the subject.

(I’ll amend my original comment to make room for other trade deficit consequences)

What’s a liquidity crisis mean?

Actually wait, It’s a slightly different problem when thinking on a national level. It’s also that there literally isn’t enough money/credit available for people to do their day-to-day buying and selling.

Mm, and that causes deflation, that makes sense.

Any situation where you don’t have enough cash. You might have other assets, but if no one’s buying and you need dough, you’ve got a liquidity crisis.
